Big Al Caesar was an underworld boss forty years prior to the events of this story. His ghost was conjured up by two aquantances of his, Fat Man and The Rabbit with the help of a magic crystal ball. They needed his talent to get the Maltese Monkey.
Although some believed the priceless treasue of the Maltese government had been mising for years, Fat Man and The Rabbit had located it locked in a vault at the County Musuem. The curators planned to return The Maltese Monkey to it's rightful owners, so the gangsters were in a hurry.
Big Al wanted to call in the help of two of his deceased 'gorilla's' from the past and volunteered to fetch the crystal ball as he needed to stretch his legs. Using the crystal ball on his way back, he saw that Eddie Spenser, who happened to be his exact double not only in appearance but also in sense of clothing, posing as himself, with Jake Kong and Tracy pretending to be Big Al's 'gorilla's'. The real Big al decided on the spot that he could get rid of his lookalike and use Kong and Tracy to do the heist.
Al quickly switched places with Spenser and got the treasure by simply walking through the vault door. Back at The Fatman's castle hideway, Al bumped into Spenser, Tracy and Kong managed to get his hand on the Maltese Monkey and a wild chase through the castle halls ensued. Just when Big Al promised to make the Ghost Busters an offer they could not refuse, Kong used the Ghost Dematerializer to send him back to the netherworld. The Maltese Monkey was returned to the Maltese government and the Fat Man & the Rabbit were arrested.
